My Long Journey with Azure DevOps — And Why So Many Still Struggle
I’ve been working with Azure DevOps (ADO) since the early TFS/VSTS era, back when it was still an on‑premises system and most Dynamics AX projects relied on a narrow, rigid set of work items and pre‑built queries. My introduction to the platform was… less than inspiring. Training was minimal, the tooling felt unintuitive, and the overall experience was confusing and inefficient.
Maybe it’s just the way I’m wired, but I’ve never been comfortable using a system without understanding how the pieces fit together. I wanted to know why things worked the way they did, not just how to click through screens. Without that foundation, I never felt effective — let alone proficient.
Fast‑forward to 2026, and Azure DevOps has evolved dramatically. So has my own ability to leverage it. After years of hands‑on use across ERP programs, software projects, and cross‑functional teams, I’ve learned how powerful the platform can be when used intentionally.
But here’s the surprising part: Despite ADO’s maturity, I still see many customers — and even seasoned consulting professionals — struggle with the basics.
The Common Struggles Haven’t Gone Away
Across the Microsoft partner ecosystem, the same issues appear again and again:
- Difficulty navigating the platform
- Misunderstanding how work items relate to each other
- Disorganized or incorrectly linked tasks, bugs, and features
- Outdated or missing status updates
- Fragmented tracking across multiple tools instead of one source of truth
These aren’t advanced problems. They’re foundational. And they slow down projects, reduce visibility, and create unnecessary frustration for everyone involved.
